The Future of "Green Buildings": 2nd German American Energy Efficiency Conference


 

 
Houston, Texas – November 10, 20009:

 

This year’s “The Future of Green Building: 2nd German American Energy Efficiency Conference” in Houston, Texas was a huge success with more than 100 participants. “The attendees have more than doubled since last year’s conference”, said Jan Christoph Wiedemann, Managing Director of the German American Chamber of Commerce of the Southern US, Inc.’s Texas Office. “It shows us that energy efficiency is becoming more and more important here in Texas and we look forward to next year”.

 

Leading German and U.S. experts gave an overview of current trends in energy efficiency of buildings. Opening remarks were made by Roland Herrmann, Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany to Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico.


Scott Mueller, Consultant by order of the Energy Efficiency Export Initiative of the German Federal Ministry of Technology talked about status and perspectives for energy efficiency in Germany. Dipl. Ing. Klaus Dilmetz from the Department of Energy Efficiency in Buildings and Climate Protection, German Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Affairs, informed the audience about the legislation framework in Europe and Germany. Michael Kleber from the Technical University of Karlsruhe gave an overview of new concepts and technologies for energy efficient buildings.


U.S. key note speaker Jim Broughton of Reihl Engineering, LLC, brought participants up to date about the current energy consumption and CO2 emissions in the U.S. Sarah Talkington of Austin Energy Green Building, gave a report on goals and results of the Austin Energy Green Building Program, while Kevin W. Murphy, ASHRAE, gave an update of ASHRAE’s Standard 90.1 and what can be expected in 2010.


In addition to the speakers, seven German energy efficiency companies gave presentations about their products and services. They joined the conference in order to establish business relationships with companies in Texas.


In the afternoon Philip Schneidau, CPM, CSM, President of BMS Management Inc. moderated a panel discussion on “What’s ahead for Green Buildings in 2010”. Panelists were Kevin Murphy from the American Society of Refrigerating, Heating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), Jim Broughton from Reihl Engineering, LLC, Sarah Talkington from Austin Energy Green Building, Michael Kleber from Technical University of Karlsruhe, and Scott Mueller, consultant by order of German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology.


This conference was an activity within the Energy Efficiency Export Initiative and was sponsored by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi). It was organized by the German American Chamber of Commerce of the Southern US, Inc., Texas office in cooperation with the U.S. Green Building Council - Houston Chapter, the American Institute of Architects (AIA), the American Society of Refrigerating, Heating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), Austin Energy’s Green Building Program as well as the Texas Renewable Energy Industries Association (TREIA).
