Ethically speaking, we are in a time period where expectations concerning corporate performance and behavior and managerial behavior are more stringent than ever. Add to this the powerful effects of technology that permit an unhappy stakeholder to commit fraud or announce their unhappiness to the world with a few keystrokes and you have a situation where being on top of your managerial game becomes much more important. Hackers, fraudsters, ponzi schemes, and insider trading are just a few of the insidious elements that have transcended decades and harnessed technology to become more sophisticated and stealthy.
Keynote speaker Norman Comstock discussed how this understanding has morphed into UHY's sophisticated mind maps, frameworks, and electronic techniques to combat the full range of risks facing modern companies. Mr. Comstock, a Managing Director of UHY Advisors TX, LLC. is a Certified Internal Auditor, as well as a Certified Information Systems Security Professional. He also is an adjunct professor at the University of Houston’s Bauer College of Business, where he teaches courses in Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC), advanced internal audit, and business ethics in the graduate accounting program.
In addition, Meril Markley, a Principal in the International Tax Practice of UHY Advisors TX, LLC, presented her research into the origins of corporate governance, risk and compliance in 14th century Europe including the first use of controls and techniques that, in electronic form, remain the foundation of fraud detection and prevention for modern-day businesses.
This event was organized by the French-American Chamber of Commerce and supported by the German American Chamber of Commerce.
